Figure Drawing: Artistic Anatomy
The human figure is one of the most compelling and complex subjects in art—an elegant structure of interlocking forms, rhythms, and anatomical relationships. This course offers a focused study of artistic anatomy, designed to deepen your understanding of the body and strengthen your ability to draw the figure with clarity and vitality.
Working directly from a live model, we will examine the skeletal framework and major muscle groups that shape the body’s movement, proportion, and expressive potential. Through demonstrations, guided analysis, and hands‑on drawing sessions, you’ll learn how anatomical knowledge supports confident, lifelike figure drawing. By connecting what you see with what you understand, you’ll develop drawings that feel dynamic, dimensional, and truly alive.
Supply list:
18″ x 24″ pad of newsprint paper
Fine point permanent markers
Charcoal, vine, or compressed charcoal (avoid the fat-squared compressed varieties)
Kneaded eraser
Art chamois (chamois from the auto part stores are more economical)
For the first class, bring the first 2 items, and we’ll discuss the rest.
Drawing begins with learning to truly see. In this foundational course, students will train the eye to observe what is actually in front of them—rather than relying on memory or assumptions—and learn to translate those observations onto the page with accuracy and sensitivity.
Through a series of guided exercises, you’ll develop coordination between the eye and hand, strengthen your sense of proportion, and build solid draftsmanship skills. We’ll explore essential concepts such as composition, value, and expressive mark‑making, giving you the tools to create drawings that feel intentional and alive.
This course is designed for artists of all levels. Beginners will gain a strong grounding in the fundamentals, while more experienced students will refine their technique and deepen their visual understanding.
